Had to go out to Washington state to add birds. The first raven was a bit iffy, though we were in a train thru a national park, but I got it later at Hurricane Ridge too. eBird reviewer challenged my common tern as it was a few weeks too early for the area. But it was not a Caspian.

This morning I made the seven-hour round-trip drive to the Ohio River Valley to chase a mega rarity that was found yesterday. I easily found my target (the phalarope) plus another new shorebird for the year.

394. Red Phalarope
395. Semipalmated Plover

The Red Phalarope was a West Virginia lifer (number 281). In addition, I added Least Bittern to my state list (number 282). It was not listed above because I saw one in Panama in February.

This morning I found a mega rarity at one of my local patches.

396. Yellow-crowned Night Heron

It was a state lifer (number 283) and Preston County lifer (number 238). It was also one of the few records of this species in the state.

This evening a couple of nighthawks flew over my yard. Every year, within a day or two of August 20, migrating nighthawks begin flying over, and will continue for about a month.

397. Common Nighthawk
