We used to get these guys (along with slow worms) all the time in the garden but I hadn't seen one for several years until yesterday (I sometimes see them in the forest but not in the garden anymore). We've had two months now of daily hardcore rain, which is when they usually appear.
This little guy is much smaller than what we used to get, and was way more active. He was remarkably fast and agile for a salamander - and they move in the weirdest way as they sort of jerk their bodies side to side to move forward.
Very cute. Just hope my Jack Russell doesn't find him.
