As someone who spends a lot of time in cleg and tick infested parts my advice is simple -cover up ! The amount of birders and walkers I see wandering about such areas wearing shorts, vests, sandals (!) is quite perplexing. I know it can be hot but by reducing skin areas you minimize the risk of being bitten.
However, I do like to wear T-shirts and find that Autan-plus spray keeps off clegs - midges eventually just go for it ! Unlike DEET which kills insects, I believe Autan basically camouflages the wearer (?). It does work though.
I was in the Glen Affric/Loch Maree area two weeks ago and the numbers of clegs were unbelievable - I had up to 10 on me at a time. However, wasn't bitten once due to the above and also awareness which I believe is the key factor. Ticks at Affric were quite bad including on the path to (from?) Coire Loch where the heather overhangs the path. The amount of people walking it it in shorts, sandals and pedal pushers - argghhh !

I take pretty good anti-tick precautions ( trousers, calf-high boots with trousers tucked in, Autan) and I still get bitten every year as I simply can't avoid bad areas to do what I need to do. Those of you completely oblivious to the threat, well........ !
