Whatsapp seems to have collapsed on my laptop, though is working OK on my phone.

If I uninstall/re-install on my laptop, will I lose all the history? I don't need to uninstall on my phone do I?

I'm not sure I can remember how to put it back on my lappy and link it to my phone?
 
Whatsapp on your laptop is copy of what is on your phone. The phone is the "master" copy deleting things off your phone will delete it for good. You can set up your phone to backup your messages but that is not set up by default.
