Perhaps but as the OP speaks English, I'm guessing they want an English name for this bird. Common Merganser being a different race that occurs in North America. Goosander is certainly the name in an British field guide to European birds!
 
...roughly 1 atlantic ocean - 2 names for 1 species albeit with different sub-species on either side of the pond...nothing more...

Same species, different labels. Common Merganser is the North American name, Goosander, the UK (& the name in all or most English language field guides covering the continent of Europe).
