Me too! I actually got the warblers, buntings and thrushes right - given the choices from the list The robins I had hardly ever even seen a picture of before. The chestnut bunting is a real beauty.

Sea-farming Ponds May 9, 2012

The madness continues with many migrants in the area at the moment. Paul Holt and Terry Townshend are at a place called Donggang which is near Dandong on the N. Korean border. From what I hear, they are swarmed with birds as well. I think the cold weather stayed extra long this spring and suddenly the flood gates are open. I was out before and after work today. I covered the mudflats in the morning and the wetlands in the afternoon.

another day of full flow passage - Yellow-rumped Flycatcher is one of my favourite birds - plus a fine lifer and patch ticks. All its needs to be perfect is a Dollarbird or two!

Cheers
Mike

LOL! Still you have named the photo as Sharp-tailed sandpiper ignoring the prantincole! I'm going crazy as i havent seen one so far this spring.

Good Luck Tom! Envy your rubythroat :-(

Dev, nice one in catching that! I smiled as I labelled the photo......

Mike, Dollarbirds will be a few weeks yet. It's unusual to see one here before June. I know a place where, if they are here, they will be and there's no sign of them yet.

Have been getting text messages from Terry Townshend today. He is with Paul Holt and Bai from Dandong and rarieties include:

Little Stint
Black-winged Cuckoo Shrike!!!
over 15 Nordmann's Greenshank
Marsh Grassbird
more Asian Dowitchers
etc...

May 13 Sea-farming Ponds

2 hour stop with both of my kids. They were keen to get outside. My son was a lot more interested in some of the machines being used to back-fill than I was!

If someone thinks the Pechora Pipit below is Red-throated, please let me know. It was completely silent when I flushed it, has a faint supercilium, dark streaking, etc... but I prefer to be corrected if wrong.

Things that I saw there included:

Common Pheasant
Mallard
Spot-billed Duck
Garganey - 1
Little Grebe - many
Eurasian Kestrel - 1
Coot - 1
Black-tailed Gull - 10
Pacific Swift - 3
Common Kingfisher - 1
Black-naped Oriole - heard calling in the surrounding hills.
Chinese Penduline Tit - 5-10
Barn Swallow - only a few
Zitting Cisitcola - the smae one singing over and over again.
Oriental Reed Warbler – 1 (FOS)
Black-browed Reed Warbler – 1
Vinous-throated Parrotbill - some singles or pairs. The big flocks disperse during this season.
Siberian Blue Robin - 1
Grey-streaked Flycatcher - 1
Dark-sided Flycatcher - 1
Asian Brown Flycatcher - 8
Forest Wagtail - 1
Yellow Wagtail - same big group remains but is incredibly jumpy
White Wagtail - 5 leucopsis
Pechora Pipit – 1 (FOS)
Meadow Bunting - 1
Tristram’s Bunting - 1
Chestnut-eared Bunting - 3
Yellow-breasted Bunting - 2
Black-faced Bunting - many

Tom, How about the Tattler, what are the chances of seeing them up there?

May 14, 2012 Sea-farming Ponds and a piece of the mudflat

Another lifer in Schrenck's Bittern today. My camera focused on the wrong thing or I would have had it quite well. That's 301..... At the ponds, everything is being funneled into one small area so I'm seeing a lot more species in one place this spring. Before the back-filling started, everything was much more spread out. I guess the last year of a site has that bonus, bittersweet really.

I figure everything is about a week later than usual this spring. The cold weather stayed extra long and spring lasted about 6 hours!

Common Pheasant
Mallard
Spot-billed Duck
Little grebe - many
Schrenck's Bittern - 1 (FOS) life bird
Intermediate Egret - 1
Little Egret - 2
Chinese Egret - 12
Eurasian Kestrel - 2
Common Moorhen - 4
Common Coot - 1
Black-winged Stilt - 2
Little -ringed Plover - 13
Kentish Plover - 6
Lesser Sand Plover - 2
Whimbrel - 5
Common Greenshank - 8
Wood Sandpiper - 1
Common Sandpiper - 3
Red-necked Stint - 10
Black-tailed Gull
Hill Pigeon - 5
