Magnificent Frigatebird. Extra-ordinary, aren't they?

(I don't actually know how to tell the Frigates apart, but that's the only species you're likely to encounter in Cancun.)

Males are black, females have a white patch like the one in your photo. Young ones have a lot of white including the head. From Cancun you can take a boat to the Frigatebird nesting grounds on Isla Contoy. Takes lots of insect repellent if you go there. Cheers, Tom.

Apparently both the Great and Magnificent nest on the Galapagos, and there there really is an issue of how to tell them apart. When I see a photo from the Galapagos of a Frigatebird with a species name, I wonder if that person really knew which one he was photographing.
