Keith have a look at this site http://www.ipaqhq.com/ it is a mine of information, also has retail outlets that specialise in PDAs.Worth a look.

Cheers Pop, will take a look at this site. Still not 100% sure that I want to go with a PDA. It would only be of use when birding as none of the programs i use for work are available in right format for PDA. Biggest stumbling block is how I persuade my other half that the PDA is essential? :-O

I am now considering the recently introduced Dell Axim x51 which is similarly priced and has the advantage of using the new Windows mobile operating system (version 5) which is supposed to be a considerable improvement on previous systems. The screen, however, is slightly smaller at 3.7 " as against 4" for the 4700.

Hi dave,
Took a look at the Dell website and am getting alot closer to spending the money. Of the 3 x51 models the middle one looks the best value, and comes with docking cradle included. According to the tech specs the screen is 3.5" rather than 3.7" will this make a lot of difference?

Keith docking cradles are included with all Ipaq models.

ps. you also get good deals with Ipaqs if you shop around.

Hi Pop,
Think what Dave said is true the 4700 is on the way out. looked at the official HP site and it is listed on the deleted model page. Which explains why the price is low and the availability poor. Local Comet had one in stock (display model) but couldn't get another for 2-3 weeks. I think that maybe the Dell is going to be the best option. Now to write my note to Santa :-O

I thinkI will spend the extra £50 and go for the top of the range 51 which has the 3.7" screen.

I may contact Hewlett Packard first to see if they are planning an imminent replacement for the 4700.

My guess is that the inroduction of the new Windows mobile operating system will see a spate of new models on the market soon.

I have been using my Ipaq for about a year, I heard so much about the Collins e Guide, that I took the plunge this week, it took 24 hours to deliver from Wildsounds, stunning service from these guys. Very very immpressed with this, though not had too much time to take a proper look. When I registered it, it crashed my Ipaq and froze it. Had to re-boot in the end, just hope this is not going to be a serious problem......As they add more sounds, does that mean we can download them from their website !!

Kingfisher from what they said to me ,the next update, they will ask for the disk back and update it themselves as it is a big update, the only cost being postage.

If I buy the SD Card version will I still beable to use my CF Card slot for backing up my Pocket Bird Recorder while the eGuide is still in?

For anyone interested I have just received this email from Wildsounds:

"You asked to be informed when the new version of the Collins Bird eGuide
would be available. The latest release of this software (version 1.1a) is
now available. We hope to make the upgrade available to members of the
public who have purchased the previous version from us, within the next few
days.

For more information, please visit our web site: www.wildsounds.com"

Dave

I spoke to Wildsounds a couple of weeks back to ask about Windows 2005 and they advised it 'should' be ok but this would be clarified and tested asap. Would expect by now they would have done this so prob' worth a call to confirm. Let me know how you get on as runnin 2005 myself and thinking of adding this to my 'xmas list' ;)

Received an EMail from WildSounds yesterday, they are now doing the upgrade, have just a few wrinkles to sort out so should be available soon.Apparently they will Email us when ready,it would appear they may ask to send disk back to them and they will upgrade,it appears to be a large upgrade.
