Hi, I'm here in Salem, Oregon, I have never been Birding, but would like to. I'm just not sure where to go. Anybody else here in Salem, Oregon? OR anybody have any advice of where to go? I guess i'm just new and not sure where to go. Any Suggestions? Thanks, Joyce

See there's no-one answered your post from your area yet!. Still, plenty of time.
Try looking up your local Audubon society!.

Just done a google search http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=birdwatching+in+salem+oregon&meta= and came up with loads of links including http://www.salem-audubon.org/

Oregon

Hi,

I do not know this area, maybe the link will help
http://www.aves.net/the-owl/blnk-usa.htm#or

For me trees in this area, would be more interesting like Giant Redwood, Cedar and Douglas Fire. But I visited only Washington yet ( Mt. Baker ).
Oregon seems an ideal place. If it is hot travel to north. If it is cold and rainy travel to south ( It never rains in southern California ).

Best regards
Dieter

Joyce,
Keep this thread going. My family and I are moving to Monmouth, or thereabouts by mid summer! I've never been there and am itching already to get out and see all the new birds that I have yet to see.

Oh just a little piece of advice, get to know your area and birds locally (the more common birds that might visit your yard or a local park), then when you do venture out a little further, some of the more common birds will be easy to identify and the ones you haven't seen before will be more noticable.

Good luck and good birding!!

Best
Beth

Thanks Beth,
Monmouth is a great area. I have some family friends that work their. I think called Yang's Teriyaki. That is the best place to eat. I've been their twice. I hope you are still at this website. Its been a while since I've been here. I lost all my link's and just recenly found the website thanks to someone else that I kept in touch with through meeting them through this website. Have an awesome day.

I've joined the Salem Audubon. I'm in my 2nd year! I can't wait to go on a coast trip! Because they are all day and I have chronic fatigue i'm not able to go. If they had half day trips I'll be able to go! I may half to see if I can request them do a half day one.

Hello Joyce,
I am in Springfield and am very new to birds / birding. I tend to go alone because I have a dog but there is a great resource through Oregon Birders Online. You can view the posts through ^that link or you can join the listserve here.
OBOL appears to have the most avid and knowledgable birders and ornithologists in the state. The people on that list often post get-togethers or other resources for finding birds. There is also an OSU listserve for Central Oregon Birders Online and I think one for the midvalley, although I haven't found it yet. Here are a few other sites that might be interesting to you:

http://thebirdguide.com/

I think I have some other Oregon related sites saved if your interested. You are also more than welcome to Private Message me if you think I can help in any other way.
Happy birding!

I was lucky enough to attend OSU for a year on exchange in the late 90s, and even luckier to be able to choose Ornithology as a university course one semester.

We regularly used to go to Finley NWR which has a great range of species.

On one occasion we also went to Newport on the coast, which is good for auks, gulls, pelicans and the like.

Best of all was a short stay at Malheur, which was absolutely fantastic.
