Algerian Nuthatch (1 Viewer)

The threats to the species are not limited to the Guerrouch Forest (as the study above showed), other sites are apparently more endangered by human activities.

Recently the Algerian authorities authorized the creation of a touristic/recreation project at one of the other breeding sites: the Bouafroun forest, located at Djimla.

A local association launched this petition today (text in English, French and Arabic). Any signature will help to bring the attention of the authorities, which hopefully will lead them to reconsider the projects.

Thanks all for your help.

The issue already reached the concerned authorities. To quote from an article published today in the independent and respected newspaper El Watan under the title: Des écologistes alertent contre les atteintes à l’environnement (Environmentalists warn against environmental damage):

“On March 13, the Minister of the Environment, Fatima-Zohra Zerouati, visiting the wilaya of Constantine, was the recipient of a well-explained request, supported by all the arguments about the risks of these recreational forest projects on the natural environment. A last attempt to save the Bouafroune Forest and the legendary Algerian Nuthatch, and to avoid unnecessary expenses for the Public Treasury”.

New breeding site

Status and breeding biology of the Algerian Nuthatch in the Guerrouch Forest. This new study showed a significant decline in the population at a section of this forest, and presented new data about the breeding biology of the species.

The species is Endangered and occur at only four sites in northern Algeria including the forest where the current study was undertaken.

Well, now we have five sites! New breeding site discovered at Ghabet Ezzen, north of Djimla forest.

After two years without apparent activities, the “recreational forest” project is already underway at Djimla Forest. A blog-post titled "Algerian Nuthatch habitat threatened by a controversial project" just published contains more details if anyone interested to read it.

On Google Maps it seems to be many forests in the general Algerian Nuthatch breeding area. I wonder if anybody systematically searched for it using satellite maps?

Looking for birds that are known to be somewhere is getting slowly boring.

I guess they discovered two new sites recently by doing exactly that: by searching in ecologically similar sites (Information about the second discovered site not available on the blog yet).

Has it ever been searched for elsewhere in NW Africa, in Morocco or Tunisia?

As you know, in Morocco there is another nuthatch species: the Eurasian Nuthatch.

Yes - but I don't see any reason why the two shouldn't co-exist; Eurasian and Krüper's coexist in Turkey, and Krüper's is closely related to Algerian. I'd agree it is unlikely Algerian will be found in Morocco (given how well-watched the country is compared to the rest of NW Africa), but the possibility shouldn't be rejected 'on principle'.

How far east does Eurasian occur in Morocco?

Is Eastern Morocco really that watched? I remember when we were in Morocco, I could get no information on possible sites in very east, everyone is focused on west coast, central Atlases and Merzouga.
