Camptodontornis gen. nov., a replacement name for the bird genus Camptodontus Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang, and Hou, 2010, a junior homonym of Camptodontus Dejean, 1826

Zootaxa. 4612 (3): 440. doi:10.11646/zootaxa.4612.3.10

Abstract

Camptodontus yangi Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang, and Hou, 2010 was erected for a complete enantiornithine bird skeleton from the Early Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation in Liaoning, northeastern China (Li et al. 2010). However, the genus name Camptodontus is a junior homonym of the beetle genus Camptodontus Dejean, 1826. Under Article 23.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999) Dejean’s 1826 name has priority.

Enjoy,

Fred

Camptodontus Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang & Hou 2010

Thanks Fred. I have this about the original name in my genus-group name file -
name: Camptodontus
authority: Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang & Hou
year: 2010
[A new enantiornithine bird (Aves) from the early Cretaceous of Liaoning, China.] 古生物学报 [Acta Palaeontol. Sinica], 49: 524-531.

OINS: Camptodontus yangi
type species: Camptodontus yangi Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang & Hou 2010
fixation by: monotypy
notes: Junior homonym of Camptodontus Dejean 1826 (Coleoptera). The publication has sometimes been dated 2011, e.g. https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/弯齿鸟属 (the date stated in the work is Dec 2010).
ICZN: -
available: yes
family: Longipterygidae

(Camptodontornis is presumably a nom. nov., not really a "gen. nov." as the title of the paper claims...?)

Yes Laurent, I agree with you. But there is another aspect to this nom. nov.

In 2014 Wang Min, Zhou Zhong-He, Jingmai Kathleen O’Connor & Nikita V. Zelenkov published a paper called: A New Diverse Enantiornithine Family (Bohaiornithidae fam. nov.) from the Lower Cretaceous of China with Information from Two New Species
Vertebrata PalAsiatica 52: 31-76

Free pdf: http://www.ivpp.cas.cn/cbw/gjzdwxb/xbwzxz/201401/P020140121386256443882.pdf

In this paper they place Camptodontus yangi Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang, and Hou, 2010 in the Longipterygidae Zhang, Zhou, Hou L. H. et Gu, 2000, but under the name Longipteryx? yangi (Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang et Hou L. H., 2010). Wang, Zhou, O’Connor et Zelenkov, 2014. [New Combination.].

The OD is: Li Li, En-pu Gong, Li-dong Zhang, Ya-jun Yang & Lian-hai Hou, 2010
A New Enantiornithine Bird (Aves) from the Early Cretaceous of Liaoning, China
Acta Palaeontologica Sinica 49: 524-531

Comments on the taxonomic validity of Camptodontornis yangi (Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang, and Hou, 2010) and its relationships to Longipteryx chaoyangensis Zhang, Zhou, Hou, and Gu, 2000 and Boluochia zhengi Zhou, 1995

Abstract

Although the nomenclature of the longipterygid bird Camptodontus yangi Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang, and Hou, 2010 may have been clouded by the finding that its generic name was preoccupied by Camptodontus Dejean, 1826 in the carabid beetles, necessitating its replacement by Camptodontornis Demirjian, 2019, the taxonomic status of this species has become even more debatable.

I finally received this paper http://sci-hub.tw/https://mapress.com/j/zt/article/view/zootaxa.4652.2.12/29721 and the conclusion is amazing:

Quote: "In summary, Camptodontornis yangi not only has no diagnostic features of its own but is also probably referable to a previously named longipterygid bird, Longipteryx chaoyangensis. Furthermore, the holotype of Boluochia zhengi (IVPP V9770) is very similar to specimens referred to Longipteryx chaoyangensis, and the only obvious difference is lateral deflection of the distal end of metatarsal IV (O’Connor et al., 2010). Such a difference is minor, and possibly due to individual or ontogenetic variation, or sexual dimorphism. If the two taxa are synonymous, Boluochia zhengi has priority as it was named five years prior to Longipteryx chaoyangensis. In such circumstances, Camptodontornis Demirjian, 2019 and Longipteryx Zhang, Zhou, Hou and Gu, 2000 are generic synonyms of Boluochia Zhou, 1995; and yangi Li, Gong, Zhang, Yang, and Hou, 2010 and chaoyangensis Zhang, Zhou, Hou and Gu, 2000 are specific synonyms of zhengi Zhou,
1995."
