On a recent salmon fishing holiday to the River Spey at Ballindalloch, I finally got the tick for the Little Gull.
Concentrating on the fishing, I at first thought they were Black Headeds in the distance but later got a better look as I had my lunch in the fishing hut.
It was clear now that they were smaller than the Black Headed and displayed tern-like characteristics in their flight and were actually swooping low across the water, competing with the Sand Martins, taking some of the larger insects. The dark under-wings were the clincher.
Not got photos as I didn’t have my camera (but I did get three salmon for the week, all returned)
