Help with ID (1 Viewer)

Hi all, I'd love some help from knowledgeable people:). So i was cycling my usual route to Cambridge city centre via the guided busway and I see some birds that I haven't seen before in a particular pond that usually has mallards, moorhens and herons. There are about 4 or 5, they're swimming and diving. Smaller than a mallard, very dark, almost black. And I think I saw a yellow patch on the rump and some red/orange on the head. I was sure i'd gathered enough features to make an ID when I got home but nothing seems to match up. They had some colours of a teal but teals aren't dark enough. Anyway this was a week or so ago and the birds aren't at the pond anymore! Any ideas?? Cheers.
