Wind farm project in Basque country Northern Spain Rejected! (1 Viewer)

Hello all,

A piece of good news from Northern Spain.
A wind farm consisting of 52 windmills projected for the Sierra of Ordunte mountain range in the Spanish basque country has been rejected today by the local government due to pressure from local environmental groups including the negative impact it would create on certain species of birds.

For anyone who understands Spanish here's the link:

Maybe there's a little hope after all

Regards

Good on the local council...unfortunately if Spanish Planning is anything like ours
they will appeal this and the Planning Inspector will rule or there will be a public enquiry...the Government will step in a bet your bottom dollar it will be approved.

Whatever you do dont think its won yet....keep your eyes open and make sure you know if and when its finally sorted.

Sorry to be a dampener...but its realistic ....unless your laws are better than ours on planning....

Here in Spain these kind of decisions lie within the autonomic states, in this case the Basque government. So I think the decision if fairly permanent.

Wind farm project in Basque country Northern Spain Rejected

“For this Congress to cut jobs and raise energy costs on working families at a time like this truly boggles the mind. The economy is shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs every month and families are struggling to pay their bills. So I fail to see the wisdom in eliminating 88,000 jobs in North Carolina alone, raising energy prices by $1,400 annually on every household, and hiking gasoline prices by 77 cents per gallon. For what? So we can possibly lower the earth’s temperature by two-tenths of a degree by the end of the century. Any serious climate change initiative must include binding commitments from China and India to reduce carbon emissions. In the absence of that, we are asking the American people to bear enormous sacrifices at a time when they can least afford it – for two-tenths of a degree by 2100.”

So, now we know heaven net's view on cap n trade. Anyway, I'd say this is not over, but a good sign. Windfarms are hell on some raptors and most bats, but some say they are inevitable. And yes, some species actually benefit, but in the end, a large spinning propellor that semi-randomly kills flying animals on a hillside can't be good for the local fauna, can it? There is no free ride anymore people.
Maybe we need to quit thinking in terms of degrees, and start thinking in terms of species. (?)
