Windows 7 problem (1 Viewer)

Hi my brother has a windows 7 premium laptop, a samsung r519, and has noticed in the last few days, that the shortcuts do not work, at all, does anyone else have experience of this problem? If you go to the programmes via the start menu, they all work fine.

Also if my brothers internet connection goes down, he attempts to close down the web page, but this just crashes the computer, and he has to do ctrl alt and del and log off then log back on again.

Any help much appreciated.

Give this a try and see if it helps.

Download and unzip the following file.

http://www.sevenforums.com/attachme...sociations-restore-default_lnk_-shortcut-.zip

Once done, do the following.

Right click on the Default_LNK_(Shortcut).reg file and click on Merge.

Click on the Run button in the Security Warning pop-up.

Click on Continue (UAC), Yes, and OK when prompted.

When done, you can delete the downloaded .zip and .reg files on the desktop if you like.

Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply.

SHortcuts gone again.

Hi Howard, the same problem has occurred , if the laptop is restarted the shortcuts begin to work again, but then just totally stop working. Any ideas?
Thanks again for your help.

Something strange is going on here and I'd like to do a quick check for any malware that may be present.

Please do the following and post the log files.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from the following location and save it to your desktop:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Download Link

Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one.

Double-click on the icon on your desktop named mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of MBAM onto your computer.

When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checked. Then click on the Finish button. If MalwareBytes' prompts you to reboot, please do not do so.

MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box.

On the Scanner tab, make sure the quick scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer.

MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware.

When the scan is finished a message box will appear.

You should click on the OK button to close the message box.

You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.

A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown.

You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so.

When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please attach that log into your next reply.

Make sure you have the LATEST version of HJT (currently 2.0.0.2) from HERE.

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Install" button to install.
It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Please do not change the default install location.

Very Important.

You need to rename HijackThis.exe to Crusty.exe. This is because some malware can hide from HijackThis.exe. Follow these instructions in order to do so.

Go to the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe file and right click on HijackThis.exe. Choose rename. Click in the title box and hit the enter key to clear what's there.

Now type Crusty.exe into the title box and hit the enter key. Right click on the Crusty.exe file and choose "Send to desktop Create Shortcut".

You can now close the HJT directory.

Run Hijackthis

Next click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button.
Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
Attach the HJT log into your next reply.
