Peninsular Malaysia - and where else? (1 Viewer)

We've somehow almost talked ourselves into returning to Malaysia in perhaps May 2010. We'll be travelling with our non-birding but outdoors/wildlife enthusiastic friends. We think they'll enjoy Taman Negara and Kuala Selangor and probably Bukit Fraser, but we'll want to try a week-10 days in another country.

Vietnam and Laos have long been on our "wish list" but I think they will need a full holiday to do them any kind of justice. I'm thinking Java as a possibility. What do local experts think? Where in the region should we consider for a decent bit of birding, some scenery and things to keep our friends entertained if we end up in a debate about a flowerpecker or bulbul?

How about coming to Sabah, Borneo ?

The best place to combined birding plus other wildlife is at Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley Forest Reserve.

Thanks both. Keep the suggestions coming in.

Horukuru - if we went to Kinanbatangan/Danum would you say that we could miss out Taman Negara? We'll have limited time (three weeks) and would like to see another country - we're getting close to 50 on our life list of nations visited. B :)

Staying a week in Kinabatangan with Danum, you won't miss Taman Negara.

More endemics could be seen here plus wildlife such as Orang Utan, Bornean Pygmy Elephants and Proboscis Monkey too.

At Kinabatangan, you can visit Gomantong Cave for the Swiftlets and etc.

At Danum Valley, the rainforest is spectacular and activities is all day round except when it is raining heavily hehehe

Hi, a week to 10 days for Vietnam is fine if you don't try to do the whole country but limit yourself to either south or north. Then you can do 2-3 good sites without too much internal travelling. April/May is hottest time of the year in the south, in the north usually not yet too hot. Rainy season is about to start then...

Thanks Dalat

I think that we'll save Vietnam for when we're travelling alone. What I'm looking for is tips about where we can go that our friends will also enjoy - for example in South Africa they loved Boulder's Beach and the Kruger NP but when we detoured for a couple of hours to the sewage works outside Cape Town they weren't quite so interested (although very tolerant). Most birders would understand why we might want to travel 1/4 of the way around the world to visit a sewage plant but most normal people ;) wouldn't.

stay away from Taman Negara at the end of the year - november and december. otherwise you'll end up spending more time inside your room.
