New member with question about feeder (1 Viewer)

I have an old chalet type feeder that needs to be refurbished. I'm pretty sure it's cedar. My question is should I paint, stain, varnish, tung oil, etc., or just clean it up and put it back out? What's best for the birds? Thanks.

What with birds having very low body mass, any chemicals gound in paint or oil stain are going to be intensified if absorbed by them somehow, so I would say unfinished wood is to be considered preferable. And if your feeder is cedar you won't have to worry about wood rot if it's left au natural.
