The migration of Red-necked Phalarope breeding in Shetland
A male Red-necked Phalarope fitted with a geolocator at a breeding site in Shetland in 2012 was retrapped the following year. Data from the tag revealed an amazing story: the bird crossed the Atlantic to winter in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America. This paper reports on the tracking of two further males from the same population.
Pale-legged Leaf Warbler: new to Britain
A Pale-legged Leaf Warbler was discovered dead after hitting a window at the lighthouse on St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, on 21st October 2016. This paper tells the story of how Pale-legged Leaf Warbler was finally added to Category A of the British List.
Report on scarce migrant birds in Britain in 2016: non-passerines
This report summarises the non-passerine scarce migrant birds recorded in Britain in 2016. It was a record year for two species – Cattle Egret and Green-winged Teal – the third-best year for American Wigeon and fourth-best for Glossy Ibis.
The Carl Zeiss Award 2018
The Carl Zeiss Award is now awarded for the best rarity submission of the year. This year’s winner was ‘a well-documented account of a ‘cutting edge’ identification containing a mix of field observations, in-hand biometrics, photos taken in the field and in the hand, showing the bird’s appearance in a range of different circumstances; and, finally, DNA results.’.
