Barn Owls vs Tawny Owls

Hi all,
Last week on holiday I had the good fortune to have both barn and tawny owls in the vicinity of where I was staying. On one occasion when the tawny owls were calling, a pair of barn owls flew in and drove them off. It got me thinking. Which (if any) of these two types of owl is dominant?

Cheers Tom. Obviously I just came accross a 'mean' pair of barn owls.
