Hi

Is this a hybrid duck, it was much smaller than a mallard, bit larger than a teal. It does not match anything in my Britsh bird ID books?

Can't really be anything other than a domestic Mallard type (colour pattern is very typical of a common type) but it's somewhat unusual in being that small and still having a 'normal' length bill, as smaller-than-wild-type domestic Mallards are usually "Call Duck" types which have a very noticeable short, stubby bill. Domestic Mallards are almost infinitely variable though (and this one's probably a female due to lack of curly tail feathers, so might just be at the small end of natural variation).

It was the small size which caught my interest! But I am sure you are right - domestic mallard type :)
