So how is your 2007 list going? (2 Viewers)

Managed 69 in Northamptonshire today - about par for the course. Some useful ones to get before I head back to Scotland on Wednesday: Little Egret, Nuthatch, Brambling, Green Woodpecker, Smew, Chiffchaff, Ring-necked Parakeet. Also only my second ever Shag in Northants and 2 Caspian Gulls.

56 for me today at Annesley Pit Top, Kingsmill Res & Garden - started a bit later than i had planned. Highlights: both partridges, Stonechat, Kingfisher, Grey Wag. A bit dissapointed that the Shoveler, Snipe & Jack Snipe that i saw at Kingsmill yesterday were not there today. Still to get Feral Pigeon & Long-tailed Tit which i thought would have been dead certs.

91 today in N Norfolk - rather disappointed we didn't make three figures, but the wind made passerine birding hard work, and we missed the usual random selection of common birds (Grey Heron the most notable!). Having said that, can't complain too much about a day with 2 Black Brant, Snow Goose, Goosander, 11 Grey Partridge, etc...

Happy New Year!

Makes my 69 in N Norfolk today look pitiful. But I was birding with the kids which slowed me down somewhat and I also wasted an hour at the end of the day dipping on the Black Eared Kite (and only adding Marsh Harrier during that hour).

Didn't get any of the 4 you mention (picked up a Grey Heron on the way home, tho) but was very pleased with my Firecrest which was a UK first for me.

Did you enjoy the bracing early morning wind or were you sensible enough to start inland?

Helen

Edit - oops, it was 70. Forgot my Mute Swan on the way out of Titchwell till I read Firecrest's post today.

Managed a respectable 9am start to the day and decided to stay local to Northampton. First bird seen was a Chaffinch in the garden. Managed a total of 60 species for the day with the highlight being a beautiful female Kingfisher perched for 5 mins only 20 feet away. Other good birds for me included great views of both male and female Bramblings, a party of 7 Siskins and a pair of Stonechats.

37 today on the island. Thought I might have beaten last year's New Year's Day 45 when I nailed Twite, Red Grouse and Merlin early on, but the lack of freshwater wildfowl did for me - no Tufted Duck, Wigeon, or Scaup - plus poor seabirding too - no Great Northern Diver, no auks apart from Black Guillemot, and no Fulmar.

But...

... I did get my rarity account off to an early start, as I found a beautiful drake King Eider with the regular Eider flock off the pier. A new bird on my self-found list, so am happy enough with the day's work. ;)

Happy new year everyone. Hope you all see everything you go for.

Not a bad start to the year, with 46 year birds:

01. Mourning Dove

19. Northern Mockingbird
20. Bald Eagle
21. Red-headed Woodpecker
22. American Tree Sparrow
23. Downy Woodpecker
24. Red-winged Blackbird

42. Rough-legged Hawk
43. American Black Duck
44. Hairy Woodpecker
45. Red-bellied Woodpecker
46. Belted Kingfisher

The highlight of the day was watching two Bald Eagles building a nest. They were weaving large sticks into the nest and seemed to be helping each other. The odd thing is that the nest is in a grove of trees right behind a farmhouse with a couple of barking dogs. I also saw another Bald Eagle lift a large dead thing from the middle of the road and carry it out into a field where it could eat away from traffic.

Not sure how I am going to record mine. Most likely just hand written notes. I think I will keep track only of the first 100. On sun and mon got 48, but only 12 fell on monday. Bird 1 of 2007 Cardinal.

Didn't get out till about 2.30 due to having to have drinks with the neighbours, and following this i had to decide whether to do Knole Park or Bough Beech. Picked the former, and later regretted it, with the report of a Ring Necked Duck at Bough Beech, a lifer (nice way to start a year), all i managed were a few Ring Necked Parakeets and a measly start of year list of around 20. |:(|. Ah well, i'll just have to try Bough Beech tomorrow, instead of preparing my Russian GCSE oral. Plenty more time left in this holiday for work... :bounce:

Managed 70 today in Devon, including Grey Phalarope, Black-Necked Grebe and Cirl Bunting...... then realised this evening that I didn't get House Sparrow!

How's the list going?
It's not!
My dad was rushed to hospital with a heart attack and so I have only managed
1. Dunnock
2. Greenfinch
3. Herring Gull
4. Collared Dove
5. Woodpigeon (and countless feral pigeons!)

Sue - Oh my goodness, how dreadful - sent you a PM :-C

This evening just as it was getting dark, I noticed a rather large bird running on the ground from the bushes to the feeder. I had no idea what it was, given its size and the fact that it was running. It turned out to be a totally unexpected year bird.

47. Northern Bobwhite

I hadn't seen a quail in the garden since last July; they usually don't move from the fields to the yard until sometime in May.

Wind and lack of preparation meant that we didn't achieve our previous highs, but we still managed a respectable 113 in Kent. Some glaring ommissions but finding a Slav Grebe at Dunge and a Shag at Dover were highlights.
