The last couple of mornings, when I've first done something (in a different browser to my usual one), a new window has opened asking me if I want to email my searches to my in box.

I don't... and have no idea what this is all about or how to stop it.

It's happening in the 'old' Firefox 60.7.1esr

It sounds like you have some sort of browser search hijacker. The best way to get rid is to use a clean up program such as Malwarebytes

The free version is fine.

Malwarebytes downloaded and run.

It found 3 files like this one

Which have been quarantined. No idea how they got there.

Laptop restarted and so far so good.

Also try AdwCleaner, also free and by Malwarebytes. Removes Adware. Recommended by my IT guru.
