I'm posting these images on behalf of an acquaintance. They were taken in the grounds of Yunnan University, next to Green Lake Park, in Kunming. The bird looks most like female Rufous-bellied, which is the only species on the eBird checklist for the site, but I want to rule out Fujian. Any suggestions welcomed.

Thanks for this Grahame. I'm slightly confused, though, as the link you posted was for a blog post about a female Fujian. Was that for comparative purposes? I can see the difference in breast pattern, but that particular bird is also quite rufous brown on the flight feathers and tail. However, there's a bit of an olive tone to the nape, back and rump of the OP bird which is not evident in the duller brown Fujian on Steve's blog but can also be seen here:

Steve's bird is also cold whitish on the belly and undertail-coverts, whereas the OP bird shows more than a suggestion of tawny coloration in the same area.

Kunming seems to sit squarely in the middle of the south of the province. HBW states that sundara occurs in the west and denotata in the east, so I'm not sure which race this would be.

Sorry for the confusion Andy, but yes, added Steve's link for comparative purposes to highlight differences.
