ABA Big Year 2019 (1 Viewer)

John just rocketed past the @815 bunch! Next up is Olaf at 829, Nicole at 830 (I think she should give up on the House Crow, but that's up to her) and then John himself at 836. This...just...got...interesting!

Laughingtrush and Parakeet added from Kauai.

Bulbul, Amakihi, Swiftlet and Elepaio are possible only from Oahu and Silverbill can be seen there also, so next to Oahu?

Still missing from Hawaii:
Code 2 - 4
Gray-backed Tern - not seen in 2016
Red-vented Bulbul
African Silverbill
Oahu Amakihi

Code 3 - 2
Mariana Swiftlet
Oahu Elepaio

I am getting the impression of a very good chance now of setting a new ABA record including Hawaii but falling short of his own record excluding Hawaii. Is that right? I have not looked at the numbers.

Looking at ebird for last records gave me September & October records for all bar the tern.

Oahu Elepaio more difficult?

Mariana Swiftlet more difficult?

What is the situation with the Tern? Is that likely to be missed,

I have John's Continental ABA currently at 764. He still misses six Code 1's and 2's, so at least 770 outside Hawaii. Still needs 15 more to break his old Continental ABA record of 784. Seems very tough.

Species only seen in Hawaii (excluding Hawaii landbirds) - 13
Spotted Dove (2)
White-tailed Tropicbird (2)
Red-tailed Tropicbird (3)
Mottled Petrel (2)
Juan Fernandez Petrel (3)
Black-winged Petrel (3)
Bulwer’s Petrel (3)
Wedge-tailed Shearwater (2)
Flesh-footed Shearwater (3)
Newell's Shearwater (3)
Great Frigatebird (3)
Red-footed Booby (2)
Short-eared Owl (1)

Short-eared Owl and Spotted Dove are gettable, but are any of the pelagic species possible?

Many thanks - presumably he can target Short-eared Owl when picking up Great Cormorant and Purple Sandpiper.

Even if only three more from Hawaii and the remaining six Code 1's and 2's, 823 + 3 + 6 =832 so 5 vagrants needed for ABA record?

Here are the updated ABA lists.
I think John should make sure he gets Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, and I wonder about his chances for Stejneger's Scoter, simply because I have no idea about the seasonal distribution of that one.

John's want list outside Hawaii:

Code 1 - 2 + 1
Purple Sandpiper
Great Cormorant
Short-eared Owl (Continental ABA only)

Code 2 - 6 + 5
Stejneger's Scoter - not split in 2019
Least Grebe
Dovekie
Short-tailed Hawk
Yellow-chevroned Parakeet - not countable in 2016
Audubon’s Oriole

Continental ABA only:
Spotted Dove
White-tailed Tropicbird
Mottled Petrel
Wedge-tailed Shearwater
Red-footed Booby

Code 3 - 15 + 7
Whooper Swan
Common Pochard
Steller’s Eider
Smew
Masked Duck - not seen in 2016
Common Cuckoo - not seen in 2016
Curlew Sandpiper
Temminck's Stint - not seen in 2016
Long-billed Murrelet - not seen in 2016
Black-headed Gull
Ross’s Gull
Least Storm-Petrel
Gray-headed Chickadee
Eyebrowed Trush
Flame-colored Tanager

Continental ABA only:
Red-tailed Tropicbird
Juan Fernandez Petrel
Black-winged Petrel
Bulwer’s Petrel
Flesh-footed Shearwater
Newell's Shearwater
Great Frigatebird

Of code 4's, Barnacle Goose and Blue-footed Booby seem most likely.

Thank you! Apparently the Gray-backed Tern is a miss then.

I wonder if Hawaiian pelagics become essential in future Big Year record attempts. John has eleven pelagic species from Hawaii not seen elsewhere and with better luck / timing few more might have been possible.

I think you've answered your own question! In fact, it seems like an area that serious future attempts should really target. With the resources and permits, a birding cruise around the Hawaiian archipelago could produce not only the remoter island endemics, but a decent number of extra pelagics.

It appears a return Hawaii trip is scheduled after a return to Australia for a charity event in respect of his conservation work:-

Apparently he's not intrested in Continental ABA record:
I have 60 ‘Hawaii only’ species on my year-list. A number of these are still findable in the continental portion of the ABA area. The established ABA Big Year record is 784, so 21 non-Hawaiian species now required to break record, which seems unlikely without a newly found motivation to converting various ‘Hawaii only’ birds – e.g. Eurasian Skylark, Short-eared Owl, etc. In truth however, I don’t feel particularly motivated to chase these. With the passing of time, I’m confident that the ‘Old ABA’ area stats will be relegated in the same manner as the old ‘yards, not metres’ track and field records – e.g. who cares who ran fastest in the hundred yards dash back in the 60’s?

John's "hit list" from the blog post. Only obvious bird missing is Stejneger's Scoter. Is it still possible and is it going to be split officially?

Lake Tahoe:
Yellow-browed Warbler(trying tomorrow after missing the Canada bird!)

Northeast in winter:
Purple Sandpiper
Great Cormorant
Dovekie
Black-headed Gull
Barnacle Goose

Florida in winter:
Short-tailed Hawk

Los Angeles any time:
Yellow-chevroned Parakeet

Texas soonish:
Least Grebe
Audubon’s Oriole

Kodiak Island winter:
Steller’s Eider

Winter vagrants to lower 48?
Yes, please!

Oahu:
Red-vented Bulbul
African Silverbill
Oahu Amakihi
Mariana Swiftlet
Oahu Elepaio
Yellow-faced Grassquit (unlikely)

Other possible targets?:
Gray-headed Chickadee Alaska
Least Storm-Petrel San Diego
Whooper Swan Alaska end of year

The eBird reviewer for Hawaii hasn’t confirmed anything for a while, he must be busy. I got Elepaio the day before the pelagic but not swiftlets (I was concentrating more on photography and not in the area we saw them in 2016) and Christian photographed Elepaio two days ago.

John added the Elepaio today!
