Panasonic Lumix G1 at last - what a gem for digiscoping (1 Viewer)

kit lens versus pancake

I received my pancake lately and made some qualitytest comparing the 14-45 mm kit lens and the new 20 mm pancake.
I use “Stephen H.Westin / test chart for use with ISO 12233 Electronic still picture cameras”.
See both pictures. I see hardly a difference between both lenses. Both lenses are good, if not very good, I think.

I also tried the pancake before the new 25-50x oculars from Leica and Swarovski and with both digiscoping is good possible I believe. For 25 mm only a tiny black edge is seen which is not due to vignetting but is caused bi y a bit to small viewangle, not a realy problem I think. From say 30 mm the complete view is well.

leica lense

Neil, was wondering what you think of the leica 25mm summilux as a possible digiscoping lense . Also the leica 45mm macro? Thanks, Coy Martin

Coy,
I would think the 25mm would be a good length and certainly the quality should be good. Go for it.

I used the G1 a lot on my recent trip to Florida and I took a lot of Raw plus Jpeg. I finally got around to processing some Raw images. These were taken with the 20/1.7 mm P lens. Neil

I have a Swro sts65 and a 20-60 lens having trouble getting a full frame with it do I need a 30mm lens and why cant the 20-60 lens do the trick with my G-1 Panasonic.

At last I have managed to get some decent images on my G1.
To be fair I haven't given it a proper go just recently but on Tuesday I had the opportunity to do some experiments.
I made some minor adjustments to the settings and even though the light was not good and the shutter speeds were low (the fastest in this set was 1/200) I was very pleased with the results.
For anyone interested there are more shots on the blog.
I used the kit lens with a kowa 823 and 32xlens.
The adjust ments were made in metering.
All thebirds were quite close the furthest being about 10m.

Nice sets of images. I will try to get some miles on G1 at christmas time - bird feeder should be very good for practice

Nice images Martin and shows what the G1 and kit lens can do close up. The speed of the AF makes capturing fast moving birds close much easier than it used to be. That and the higher iso possible makes it a good choice for backyard birds.

Is the UCA the best choice for an adapter for the ATS65 Swaro scope along with 20-60x zoom? And what lens for the G(h)-1 would work my scope and eyepiece? I am currently considering if I should buy the DCA or UCA for my P6000 and perhaps future G-1.

Hi martin, can you tell me what adapter you use with your kowa please, and how well balanced is it?
Many thanks. Michael

The UCA is useful for the P6000 as it allows more unvignetted range with the zoom eyepiece. It will also enable you to mount the G1 with various lenses and keep AF.
It's main disadvantage is that it's a bit unwieldy for walking around as it's tends to snag branches easily.

I had little pratice today at bird feeder. Not enough time to stay long, so only one of few keepers. It is very hard to manual focus and get spot on sharpnes. Luckily G1 have nice zoom for focusing.

Unwrapped the G1 and the kit lens yesterday and got out today for a few mins to test it out on the 30x DS Nikon eyepiece.
Pics attached show the amount of vignetting. Pic one is at 14 two at 25 and three at 45. (poor shots but show the extent of the Vignetting)
Over all I am happy with the G1 even with the vignetting which is easily cropped out.
Auto focus is great with the feature which tracks the target and continues to focus.
Very similar results with the scoptronic maxview 40.
Adapter is the FSA-3 and the 52-58mm Step ring. Which is the same as I use for the Nikon 8400.

More test shots to follow in next post.

Oh, so many different lenses work aslong as I have the UCA? (Kit-lens only works with the fixed eps regardless?)

And btw, with the AF 45-200/4-5,6 Vario O.I.S Micro 4/3 the G1 can be a decent walk-along camera too? For birds.

I use the Kowa TSN-DA1A with a 52 mm thread. The 52mm thread fits into the kit lens.
I have to say it is a little heavy at the camera end but an extra half turn on the tripod screw to fix it is usually sufficient.

G1 does very well for fast moving birds. :t:
I can't get the following non-stop bird with my 8400. :C

STS80HD + G1 + 14-45mm kit lens.

OH WHAT FUN

This has been one of the most interesting (and longest) threads that I have ever read.
The interest on my part was generated by the insertion of Neils spectacualr shots along with those of many others. The G1 was appropriately named #1 in '08 by who ever that was. Once they get the lens right it may go down as digiscopers choice of the decade.

If you want more fun go to the gallery and in the lower right type in panasonic G1. For the record there are plus 175 great pics there. If you type in gf1 or gh1 there is only one. There are even several beauties by the G1 with longer lenses.

Joe
