This list now requires further amendment to include (a) the Baird's Sandpiper that graced the Flashes from 9-16th September 2016; (b) the 3 Woodcock found along the Salwarpe by Pete & Marjo Lewis on 11th December 2017; (c) the ever increasing number of Avocets present during the breeding season.

According to Phil's post from 16th June 2019 Dave Jackson counted a total of 87 birds at the Flashes that morning, made up of 44 adults and 43 young. Unless anyone knows otherwise I take it that this is the new record maximum count for Avocet on the reserve!
Thanks for updating this Andy. Will need to double check the position re Avocet - for WeBS and county recording purposes the counts are of adults and fledged juveniles only.

Only the listed figures the one which seems surprisingly low and could easily be bettered is Sanderling with a peak count of just three birds.

Have previously done similar exercises for wildfowl and gulls/terns - will repost and update as appropriate.

Managed about 3 hours down the flashes this afternoon. There was a family group of 5 swallows flying around between the cafe and the Surf Shack. Also 3 Chiffchaff by the Surf Shack.

Fairly quiet on the flashes but the following were noted

Shelduck (juvenile)
Shoveler (4)
Teal (35)
Avocet (13)
Lapwing (40+)
LRP (1 ad, 2 juv, 1 chick)
Curlew (11)
Dunlin (1)
Snipe (1)
Common Sandpiper (3)
Green Sandpiper (7)
...and another 4 or 5 Chiffchaff on the fox fence either side of the hide

At the start of a Bank Holiday weekend with much promise the monthly list presently stands on 96 species so a bit of work to do to reach the average August total of 105.33 species - the lowest total to date was 102 (last year) with a highest return of 108 in 2013 and 2014.

A period of hot weather with winds from the east / south-east could bring wonders at this time of year - Black Terns already reported at Belvide and Blithfield this morning - but there a still a few holes in amongst the commoner birds. Potential additions over the next few days include (year ticks in bold):

Garganey, Pochard, Osprey, Red Kite, Pheasant, Oystercatcher, Whimbrel, Spotted Redshank, Redshank, Common Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Black Tern, Sandwich Tern, Skylark, Tree Pipit, Whinchat, Mistle Thrush, Song Thrush, Nuthatch, Yellowhammer
