I am thinking of visiting Berlin next week for a birding trip would also love to see other wildlife as well as the city.

Where are the best places to go near Berlin to se birds and other wildlife?

What about any guides?

Hope someone can help.

Hi,

There are many good sites around Berlin, and I'm sure some of the people with good knowledge of Berlin will give you detailed info. It would probably help if you give some more details on what you're after, especially if you have some specific targets.

This is a local guide I found with google: http://www.birdingberlin.com/field-trips.html

There is a English book on where to find birds: https://www.nhbs.com/title/183301/a-birdwatching-guide-to-brandenburg-and-berlin

And a good German book: https://www.nhbs.com/title/163176/vogel-beobachten-in-ostdeutschland

This websites gives some info: http://www.birdinggermany.de/brandenburg.htm The sites 4 and 5 are the ones for the Great Bustards, also good for Montagu's harrier I think. Site 2 is great overall...

Thanks dalat.

Have looked at some of these before briefly but nothing is sinking in LOL.

Have you been to Berlin - if you had 5 6 days where would you visit to see wildlife without going too far?

I hope to spend at least 1-2 days within the City as well.

I've only been to one of the Bustard sites and done some reading on sites near Berlin, but ended up not going. I personally would mainly go after a few target birds if being in Berlin next time (e.g. Barred Warbler, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Ortholan, Tawny Pippit etc.) or spend a few days in one of the larger areas (e.g. Gülpe, Unteres Odertal or Schorfheide-Chorin)

I could scan you a few pages of the German site guide. Even if you don't read German, the maps will be helpful. Of course it would be helpful to know what you're looking for, general nice birding and some diversity, or rather sites for specific targets.

Fatbirder has also some brief info to give some ideas:

Also cloudbirders has some trip reports on Berlin and Brandenburg, to give you some ideas.

Berlin is certainly a good idea to combine city, culture and birding in the sourroundings...

I would like to see some new birds and mammals ie ortolan; barred war, any woodpeckers except green and great spotted, nice nature reserves and landscape.

Check this area on your map.
Near Rathenow is located lake Guelper see.

More detailed map
http://www.birdinggermany.de/havel.htm

At point 4 is good for Ortolan ( check also ornitho.de in German language also Ortolan ).
Point 1 is good for Barred Warbler ( German Sperbergrasmücke ).

For White-tailed Eagle and Osprey very high chances around the lake.

Northeast of Rathenow is Buckow/ Nennhausen.
Very good chance for Great Bustard and Montagues Harrier.

Map look here

Mammels quite difficult, but in Berlin in the area of Teufelsberg, I saw quite often wild pigs.

Ok, I had a look at the book, here a brief selection of some sites around Berlin:

- Quite close to Berlin is the Döberitzer Heide, good for Barred Warbler

The best sites in the wider surroundings, each good for a couple of days:
- Gülper See (see also info by albatross above)
- Spreewald (good for all woodpeckers, Black Stork)
- Schorfheide-Chorin
- Unteres Odertal

I'd pick one or two of the last four sites and spend at least 2 days in earch (stay overnight there), and then spend two mornings at the Döberitzer Heide and Havelländisches Luch (Bustards) and the afternoons and evenings in Berlin.

Thanks all for the information. It has been extremely useful. I had a good look at the areas and some of the species and their proximity to Berlin. They all look very good. Finally some information could sink in and I can sketch a plan.

They have been on my mind and it has been one of my reasons ro visit BERLIN. Which is the best parks areas to look for the urban Goshawk?

I hope as they are probably going to be breeding they are not territorial and start swooping at me. I have read that they can do that - I do not fancy facing them talons.
