Could this be Long Tailed Jaeger ? Seen from the promenade in Cairns , bathing. The heavily cropped picture shows the beak .

Say what!

Is that split now?

The Australian Bird Guide (Menkhorst et al 2017) states Australian ssp macrotarsa "may be split in future; given separate account here to encourage field separation." It reaches New Guinea as a non-breeder, but is quite different from affinis of Japan & China to Borneo, non-breeding to Australia.

HBW Alive treat macrotarsa as a separate species. I saw both last year at Broome, after being told to look out for them by Nigel Jackson.

Thanks for that.

From a head-on view it sure has that capped look doesn't it? But definitely gull-billed tern. This is a good lesson to always take multiple photos, especially of the side of the head, where possible.
