My son is doing a bird merit badge for his Scout troop and he is having a hard time deciding on what kind of bird this is any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a male House Finch ;)

A Purple Finch would not have that much streaking on the belly and side areas
 
Nice illustration Liam! Now that you point it out, I see that the male purple finch does have a similar pattern to the female.
