Diopter Settings (1 Viewer)

Can I stick my neck out here and ask a silly question?

Shouldn't the zero dioptre setting on a bino mean that both barrels are focused on infinity at the same time? In other words the zero means there is zero difference between the focus of the two optical tubes? Which would mean the definition of zero dioptres in relation to binos just means the two tubes achieve focus on a subject with the focusing lenses in exactly the same position.

OK, I am behind the sofa now so you can start firing.......

Oh, there you go, injecting logic and common sense into a perfectly good discussion thread.

That had occurred to me, but I didn't have nerve enough to actually say it out loud.

It seems an odd use of the word "diopter" which already has a precise meaning.

So there is no way to define the term without involving a human (or possibly other) eyeball?

Hi, Maljunulo:

The answer was all in the first sentence of my previous text. That was the doctrine. In practice, the human aspect can’t be removed. Even with that anomaly, the results are perfectly acceptable ... for all PRACTICAL purposes. I explained all this last night. However, as with so many posts, I was almost done when the whole thing just disa—darn—peared. I realize that many of those who seek complex solutions to non-existent problems will find fault with my answer. Yet, in the real world it will suffice.

Also, “Zero Diopters” applies to only ONE telescope at a time.

I hope all had a great Christmas! The weather was great in the Phoenix area. However, I will deal with the snow in Twin Falls just to have my own bed back! :cat:

Cheers,

Bill
