Yes...another of THOSE THREADS

But we currently have thread for all the other widespread difficult groups, such as owls, rails, and nightbirds, so might as well throw this out there. I think many people would consider the various grouse and quail to be on par with these in difficulty to view, and many species are not only reclusive, but have limited ranges and are non-migratory, meaning a lot of travel is needed.

Here is my list, 13 ABA (with 10 to go!) and 21 total. Have at least one member of each family except for the megapodes.

CRACIDAE
Plain Chachalaca - Texas

NUMIDIDAE
Helmeted Guineafowl - South Africa

ODONTOPHORIDAE
California Quail - California
Gambel's Quail - California, Arizona, New Mexico
Scaled Quail - Arizona

Mountain Quail - California

PHASIANIDAE
Red-legged Partridge - England
Common Quail - Kenya (pre-birding)
Ruffed Grouse - Michigan
Greater Sage Grouse - Wyoming
Sooty Grouse - California
Willow Ptarmigan - Alaska
Rock Ptarmigan - Alaska
Wild Turkey - Michigan, California, Texas, Arizona, probably elsewhere
Ring-necked Pheasant - Michigan, Ohio
Green Pheasant - Japan
Cape Spurfowl - South Africa
Yellow-necked Spurfowl - Kenya (pre-birding)
Gray-winged Francolin - South Africa
Sharp-tailed Grouse - Michigan

Our native grouse can drive me nuts... until very recently I had only seen Ruffed Grouse (and that just barely!), it took many tries before I got Spruce and still don't have either Sooty or Dusky. Later this week I'm going to a festival in Oklahoma to see Lesser Prairie Chicken.

I've generally had good luck with western quails though, and cracids.

Ovenbird43,

My first ever sighting of Scaled Quail was on May, 21, 1995 near Optima, Oklahoma. A few days later I saw them again in the Willcox Ponds area, Willcox, Arizona.

On a second 10-day birding trip to Arizona I again was able to see the quail around Elfrida, Arizona (on August 10, 2006).

Neat bird!

Black Mesa? I've dipped on those darn quail both times I've been. Definitely some good birding though.

Try Desert Hawk Golf Course, off McCulloch Blvd, Pueblo West, CO - the rough areas on the edge of the golf course or the surrounding gardens at dusk where they presumably roost. Very easy but as everywhere rampant development is destroying their habitat. Also Curve-billed Thrasher here, singing from the few remaining cholla cacti. A sad sight but very easy.
