Timber Rattlesnake (1 Viewer)

I saw my first Timber Rattlesnake yesterday. What an amazing creature - about 5 feet long. It was sunning itself on a rock in the middle of a very small stream about a hundred yards from us as we chased a Louisiana Waterthrush upstream. This one was yellow and black - does anyone know why there is such a variety in colors in the pictures online?

Rattlesnakes are something I associate with the west so it was really great to see this eastern species. It seemed pretty docile and didn't rattle even when it came across the stream towards us and was under 20 feet away.

A great creature but it certainly made me give a second look at where I was putting my feet for the next hour or so.
