Oil spill in North Sea now affecting seabirds

The recent leakage / spill at Statfjord is now producing victims. Approximately 5% of the gulls passing my local seawatching headland are affected. Herring Gulls, Great Black-backed Gull and Gannet all affected.

Hope to check out more later in the week.

Some not so good record shots of what is going on can be seen on the last two posts here.

This is the second time THIS YEAR oiled birds have turned up on the same stretch of coastline. Enough said.

Sounds serious - I'm surprised at how little media attention this has had in the UK, given that it's presumably affecting a lot of British birds.

Yeah, I've seen not mention of this at all on the UK news programmes/websites.

I'll keep an eye out this week - thanks for the heads-up, Julian.

It is difficult to get the media interested and "the big boys" - including NINA, the Norwegian seabird "experts" are dismissing the sightings. Thankfully others witnessed oiled birds on site and are now coming forward with observations.

It was the second largest spill in the history of Norwegian oil production. 4000 tons of the stuff this time....
