What time of day should I go birding? (1 Viewer)

When do you think I should go birding? I normally go in the evening (6-7), in the hope of spotting an owl (no luck so far).

Also, though I'm English I live permanently in Granada, Spain. Could you tell me which special birds to look out for in that region and where I might see them? Thanks.

Depends on what you are looking for; songbirds to me seem easier in the morning, but waterbirds can be good all day, although lighting and tides may can affect things. Also it depends on where you are birding and how much disturbance it gets. I find birding the local greenbelt difficult after 9, because of all the dogs and runners scaring birds.

Birds of course are around all day if you make an effort though...

I certainly find that in places where a lot of people and dogs are around it's best to be out before they are but although early morning can be most productive there will be peaks and troughs of activity through the day and it can vary a lot. It's worth trying any time of day I would say, get out early if you can but a bit of experimenting with going out at different times can be interesting. In my garden I find there's usually a lot of activity early in the morning, then a lull, then another flurry late morning, a siesta over lunch, a bit of lazy activity mid afternoon followed by another slow down before a last feed and socialising before bed.

Hey, my sister in law has a b/b at Antequera which is close to El Torcal and the birding there is supposed to be quite good. I am going to drive down in the summer to spend a couple of days up there whilst on Hols in Marbella. I will post a report on my return. Meanwhile if you fancy a day or two up there, drop us a line and I can give you their details.
