Hi,

I think that there’s some Pochard in there, but it doesn’t look like a standard female. Any ideas?, situated at Kings Mill in Notts.

Cheers.

Definitely not a standard female Pochard. Appears to be a hybrid of some sort. Could a Red-crested Pochard be in there?

It is an Anas x Aythya hybrid in my opinion. I can´t go further at the moment

Head shape may suggest tufted duck for the Aythya, but I have no idea on the Anas, except that it may have been some color variant, as the hybrid clearly is.

The bahama pintail in the background of thise picture looks as if it could be a similar color mutation

But I am not saying the Anas is a Bahama pintail; i have seen something that may have been the same mutation also in mallard.

some more information would be helpfull: How big was it ? how exactly did the speculum look? did it dive ? did it call?

Hi, I’d say it was roughly Mallard size in length. It swam past me and then disappeared so I didn’t observe it feeding unfortunately.

That is quite large, however I do not get the impression that mallard is involved here .

concerning head shape: look at the outline of the rear of the head , it is like in Pochard x tufted duck and other tufted x aythya sp.

for bill coloration and bill shape , it doen´t look like a RC pochard was involved the high front of the head could be from tufted duck but some Anas also show this , ege. bahamensis or castanea, or the wigeons.

in most cases such hybrids show some reddish/pinkish coloration in bill

I can't help it the head pattern reminds me of male Baikal Teal. Could this be one of the parents - despite the seemingly large size?

A lot of duck hybrids show a face pattern superficially resembling Baikal Teal, so while perhaps not impossible it isn't necessarily likely.

There seem to be a few weird hybrids cropping up recently that look like they might have White-cheeked/Bahama Pintail in them. Some more photos of presumably the same bird here: https://twitter.com/sibechat/status/1233770793924022274

It reminds me a bit of this (Northern) Pintail x Tufted Duck http://birdhybrids.blogspot.com/2015/03/northern-pintail-x-tufted-duck.html - I could imagine White-cheeked instead of Northern producing a result like this?

Me too, but not really to prove...

concerning the baikal teal like pattern , as Steve said, it is quite common for this to appear in crosses where there is no baikal teal involved...some examples:

Mallard x American black duck

Northern Shoveler x Eurasian wigeon
