Can't recollect exactly when my previous earliest was, but certainly had them in mid to late April many times before; at a guess, somewhere around 15th. So today's is pretty spectacular for me. There are earlier published records; in recent years, one on 3 April 2017, and historically, the earliest ever 18 March 1968. But the bulk arrival of the majority of the breeding population is typically in the last week of April - I'd guess that would tie in well with your Gambia birds.

I've had two April 1sts. (no fooling!) circa 30 years ago both males, one in a Hawthorn bush adjacent to Eastbourne promenade, and another again in a line of Hawthorn bushes beyond the North end of the KGV group of reservoirs (London, Essex). :t:

Had a few more today during a lunchtime walk down to the pier, bringing the North American total to 90:

85: Anhinga
86: Common Yellowthroat
87: Willet
88: Red-breasted Merganser
89: Whimbrel
90: American Redstart

Birds seen and heard from home in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire and during state- sanctioned daily exercise (ie. a walk to the River Clyde and back)

1. Blackbird
2. Robin
3. Coal tit
4. Long tailed tit
5. Coal tit
6. Great tit
7. Bullfinch
8. Blue tit
9. Song Thrush
10. Chiffchaff
11. Blackcap
12. House Sparrow
13. Starling
14. Herring Gull
15. BH Gull
16. LBB Gull
17. Wren
18. Jackdaw
19. Carrion Crow
20. Rook
21. Goldcrest
22. Goldfinch
23. Goosander
24. Mallard
25. Grey Heron

31. Willow Warbler

35. Grey Wagtail
36. Pied Wagtail
37. Oystercatcher
38. Pink- footed Goose
39. Chaffinch
40. Sand Martin
41. Moorhen

This morning I heard a House Wren and saw and heard a White-eyed Vireo. Those should be new to the North American list.

Five more for the Hong Kong list from dog walking today and yesterday:

Plaintive Cuckoo
Greater Coucal
Great Egret
Peregrine
Common Sandpiper
.

But the big discovery was that a Black-crowned Night Heron roost behind the beach I walk the dogs on has become a nesting colony - with at least six nests! This was confirmed this morning by my mate who runs Hong Kong Bird Watching Society's Egret and Heron Research Group.

Cheers
Mike

Not sure if Common Gull is on the UK list. I thought they'd all left weeks ago but there was one on the estuary this morning with a raft of Black-headed Gulls.
