Yucatan-kid friendly trip (1 Viewer)

Last year I hit the Yucatan, basically Cozumel and Tulum area _ report here :
https://naturescapeimages.wordpress.com/2018/01/06/mexico-november-2017/

This November I plan on revisiting the Yucatan with my girlfriend and our 10 year olds. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for a base with a pool etc that may be in a location that might allow me access to some birding spots.

I don't know if I want to stay in Cancun at all but perhaps somewhere between there and Carmen del playa. Tulum was fantastic and would love to stay there again but there isn't much to keep the kids occupied.

I understand that the locality will involve me hiring a car and driving but perhaps there are some sites in that area that would be birdy.

Thanks!

Julian

Julian, you do not name the level of cost you are prepared to incur?

A rather expensive option but set in a wonderful park with birding on ground and within easy reach in a car would be Hacienda Chichen: http://www.haciendachichen.com/ You could even bird the north coast from there if you choose.

Another I can think of that may not have a full size pool but is less costly: https://riobecdreams.com/?gclid=Cjw...dHpmo8SsHObCsx5B0TxJ2pehcxGmtrixoCu_AQAvD_BwE - this is a good starting point for Calakmul.

http://www.puertacalakmul.com.mx/ is another location near the Calakmul ruins

Obviously there are tons of hotels along the coast with different levels of activities available. I am not sure what your 10-year-olds expect.

Hi Niels,

Yes, cost is always an issue. I am looking at package deals and expect to end up in a coastal resort with typical pool and beach amenities and assumed these would fall in the area between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

I was fishing for people that may have done similar trips and found a typical Iberostar type of hotel, I was just unsure what area to concentrate on if say, there were more birding areas towards Tulum. The less driving to good birding areas the better.
I will be researching more of course.

It may be there are similar resorts closer to Tulum and that is what i would look into since that would enable me to do Muyil and Coba again. Maybe I don't have to stay up near Carmen Del Playa.

Thanks anyways!

Tulum seems to be a major tourist attraction so I would be surprised if you cannot find something around there. The hotel strip in Cancun itself is uninspiring, some of the larger resorts further south with golf on site have some birding on site as well.

I was once placed in Moon palace just south of Cancun and did have some good birds on site.
