I have been looking back at some old pictures of birds I took outside sydney and couldn't find this songbird in the field guides.

Any idea what species it is?

Brown Honeyeater is a good bet

I'm thinking maybe not a honeyeater, and bill looks too short and straight for Brown

That's what I was thinking too, but still not sure bill's not too thin. Could be though.

Looks like a Prinia to me but never having been to OZ, not sure they have any.

I'd suggest a dull golden-headed cisticola. Think the bill and tail length are better for this species than the grassbird

Cisticola would have been my back up suggestion, in fact it was my first impression and I changed my mind.

Thanks for the feedback, I do remember seeing some golden-headed cistocola in reedbeds but it didnt click with seeing them in trees
