This photo is taken last July in Vegoritis.
Is it a Great Bittern or a Little Bittern?

Doesn't look like a Great Bittern, with that dark cap.
I would say juvenile Little.

Is Vegoritis in Greece?

Yes! The lake Vegoritis lays in North West Greece. The Village Agios Panteleimon where I go birdwatching it is about 126 Km away from Thessaloniki , direction Florina or Kastoria.

Hi Ody,

My first birding-trip outside the UK was to northern Greece in 1980, fantastic birding area. Visited Lake Mitrikou, Evros Delta, Avas Gorge and many other great spots, saw my first and only Common Cranes and Dalmatian Pelican, there.

Hope that it's still as good as I remember.

Hi, Tom.
Common Crane I have never seen here myself!
In Vegoritis there are many Dalmatian Pelicans and also White Pelicans.
I visit very oft Vegoritis! My mother in low lives there.... |:||

As JanJ says, it is a Squacco Heron - very common in Greece and not as secretive as either Bittern.
Thank you , Capercaillie71.
I could observe many Squacco Heron in Vegoritis.
I didn't know that this was a juvenile Squacco Heron!
