Sad news from the Osprey team at Bassenthwaite, England (1 Viewer)

There is some very sad news about one of their Ospreys, No 14 (aka White 14). Apparently he has died on his southbound migration through Mali in West Africa. This news was reported by the British Trust for Ornithology and the Bassenthwaite team are waiting for more details.

He was 7 years old and has wintered on the island of Bioko, south of Nigeria, for the last few years. He had been fitted with a satellite tracker, as a nestling, at the Bassenthwaite Lake nesting site in 2013. He would return to Cumbria every year, spending his summers in the South Lakes area, but never did find a mate to pair up with.

A real character.
A regular observer noted he was a bit of a menace, always arriving too late to pair up, disturbing two nearby Osprey nesting sites, where pairs were already established. Including 2020, he returned to Cumbria every year.
His wintering site was the Island of Bioko in Equitorial Guinea, over 4000 miles from Cumbria
On one unusual day in 2019, he took a trip from South Cumbria crossed to the east coast of Yorkshire, north of Spurn, ended up around 40 miles from Grimsby,then promptly turned back and flew back to Cumbria- a trip of around 400 miles!
