They are one of my favorite groups of birds. Just a little tid bit ------ If anyone comes across this and is going to Bali (some time in the future) ----- make sure you get to see the Javan Kingfisher. Common and easy outside of Ubud. We spend a month in Eastern Bali every year - but always a night in Ubud (wife shopping / seeing friends). Javan never fails to blow my mind.

It's hard to see many kingfishers when you aren't birding around the world! I have only seen one, good ol' Belted Kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon).

Only one, the Belted, in Oklahoma.
I met a couple who lives in the middle of town and they had the good fortune of having a Belted Kingfisher frequent their Koi Pond. They didn't see it as a good thing and asked me what they could do about it eating their expensive Koi. My suggestion: "Buy cheaper carp. The Kingfisher is priceless."

Yup. Koi are Carp! I've lived by that law since living (here) in California the last 30 years. Nothing like visiting some rich friends and commenting on the big CARP in their little Japanese pond thingies complete with little bridge thingy.
