Does anyone know if these are still there at the end of July?

Yes, there should still be some around, though not as many as earlier in the summer (it is usually the first tern to start heading south after breeding).

The Winterton-on-Sea colony is usually great - but they are not here at the moment...

Yep, unless the colony has been deserted, which is unlikely. They should be on eggs by then.
