Eleanor (WWT) Confirms work will go ahead on Monday And Tuesday 15th and 16th OCTOBER at the FLASHES.
The channels in front and to the sides of the main Avocet hide .
This is to ensure that Avocet chick rearing zones are viable come next spring.
At present the water level is 0.23. If anyone who is visiting the FLASHES over the weekend could make a note of the level.on the marker and post on here or text me that would be very much appreciated.
If the FLASHES flood we will need to open the sluice .

Evening at Flashes

Initially I was just going to check the water level on Zhen brook and at the sluice.
The water had stabilised at 0.28 that is 5cm up from Friday, but still ok for work to start tomorrow from c8.45ish.
The Hen Brook level started to drop when I left late on.
I decided to stay till dark and lucky to see the goosander that Andy P saw drop in for a brief time before heading NW.
The muddy east shore of the 2nd Flash was supporting a range of feeding birds inucluding:- grey wag, pied wag, mipits, green sand, snipe, lapwing and teal. This is the first evening roost I have done at the FLASHES since the spring due to the lack of water and consequently no birds. But hopefully I'll manage a few more late ones before the end of the year especially with rising water levels.
Species count Flashes:
Teal 38. Shoveler 2. Goosander fem.
Water rail.
Snipe 4. Curlew 13. Lapwing 240. Green sand (Andy had 4 at dark),
BHG 850-900 roosted. Large gulls several flocks flew over some dropped down but never roosted.
Green woodpecker. Stock Dove 45. Jay. Rook 2.
Starling 25. Mistle thrush.
Cetti's singing.
Pied wag 4. Grey wag. Reed Bunting 2.

Tommorow at FLASHES

Contractors will be digging channels at the FLASHES tomorrow from approx 9am. The work will be over two days from Monday to Tuesday.
This will improve the site for waders and especially for Avocet chicks .

Check and repair stock fence damaged by fallen tree.
PLEASE meet at Moors car park from 8.45ish
