My friend took these photos by the Aheloy river in Bulgaria on July 1st. I thought Hippolais olivetorum but not having heard it or seen it to get an idea of size thought I would get confirmation!

Thanks as always,

Chris

It looked brown and shortish pp on my phone screen when I commented before, I can see better now I'm looking at it on a proper screen (my feeble excuse), Brian is right of course.

I do not follow either Brian.
For instance, you can see the outermost primary in the second photo, and it clearly projects beyond the primary coverts, which would be odd for Olive-tree.

I am as guilty as Richard here. Looking on my phone and commenting.

The reality here is that now I am on my home computer I can see that p1 is longer than p covs and the bird is therefore not Olive-tree. The p projection is long - 75% or more (on Olive-tree it is 75-100%) - and the bill is large.

Baffling.

"P1 is longer than p covs and the bird is therefore not Olive-tree.

Please help me understand this. Is it an Olive Tree Warbler or is it not, and why?
