Hi, birders!
I'd like to know what species can you identify in the picture. It was photographed during summer, a few years back in the buffalo reserve of Kápolnapuszta, near the Kis-Balaton. Thank you in advance!

It's a ficedula flycatcher species including Pied, Collared and Semi-Collared.
Could be a female Collared.

Hi and welcome !

Difficult to identify a Ficedula flycatchers, especially when base of tail and tertials cannot be seen. It is either Pied Flycatcher or Collared Flycatcher, I'd favour the former.

Yea, now that I know it's a flycatcher, I looked it up in The Book and it is really not easy to distinguish them. Thank you anyway, the genus and sex is enough for this one! :)

I'm glad we've been able to help.
I am confident it is a female Collared flycatcher but a lot of birdwatchers have different thoughts on tricky species.

Did you hear the bird make a call, and if yes, can you describe it? In that case, it might still be possible to determine the species.

The greyish neck and the amount of white at the basis of the primaries look better for Collared IMO. Still, don't take it as a safe ID!

Dear Sir
Thank you for the link - I shall take a look. Mind you there does seem to be a dearth of information online about this particular reserve. It seems everyone who goes to Hungary goes to Hortobagy and other famous places, completely by-passing Kis-Balaton.
