Caspian Gull, Cromer? (1 Viewer)

Louis_P

Average Birder
Hello, I photographed this gull at Cromer yesterday and I think I have photographed the regular 3CY bird there. The regular has brown streaking on the nape just like the bird in my photo. I just thought I would it put it on here for a second opinion (the first opinion was the local gull expert on Twitter and he said it looked good for the 3CY Casper) as this would be a lifer for me (although I almost definitely saw a juv Casper as well but I'm hopeless at juv gull ID).

Thanks,
Louis

That's exactly what was asked on Twitter and I'm afraid I don't. I jokingly said that I must have 10 photos of every gull on the beach but looking through my photos, I just have the one of this individual.

Thanks,
Louis

ok. is there an open wing pic of it, steve? even in the twitter pics it doesn't look like a pure cachinnans. i've checked some pics of that ind. and it seems to be the very same. bill is a bit unusual and head marks could indicate that it is not a pure one but mostly it looks ok. sorry louis - tells me not to try ID a bird in a difficult plumage in a less than optimal pic ;)

Sorry I haven't seen any flight shots of it Lou. There are plenty of shots of it around though, at various ages too.

From a West European perspective it looks nothing like a European Herring Gull to me, so even with a few mixed genes perhaps? it's a 'Caspian Gull'.
I agree Louis' pic doesn't show it in the best light, but surely it would be even more innacurate to call it EHG based on the Twitter pics.

Okay, thanks everyone. I'm staying up that way soon so I can try to see it again (or the juv) and hopefully get an in-flight shot. I think the 3cy is the same bird as last year (although it was 2cy then, of course) and if so, it has been confirmed by the coordinator of Norfolk Caspian Gull records (but of course it could be a different bird or the coordinator of Caspian Gull records for Norfolk could have not spotted some 'problems' with the bird being a Caspian).

Thanks,
Louis
