We've had 70 qualifying entries this month from which 30 have been selected for inclusion in the voting booth for members to vote upon.

There's a good selection of subjects.

The winners are -

99 members cast their vote in the first competition of 2010.

A bit of a two horse race from the outset despite there being several other very good entries.

The winners are -

1st place - merrigil with Baby Emperor which attracted 23/99 votes.

2nd place - jtwood with Short-eared Owl - 20/99votes.

Joint third with 9/99 votes -

Worthy winner and runners up, it was really difficult as usual. Proud to have got through to top 30 amongst such quality images but realise it was subject matter that got there.
I will keep trying though!

I too was just very happy to be in the final thirty, especially in such amazingly good company, and as it didn't occur to me to vote for myself (my choice came second) - I'd like to say 'thank you' to the kind person that did vote for my pic!

Congratulation to the winner and runners up in the Competition. There were some superb entries in this one. I can't help thinking that Jim Wood's superb Short Eared Owl would have run away with any other competition but came up against an extraordinary and unique entry in the Emperor Penguin Chick. Many congratulations to Merrigil.

The quality of the overall selection can be seen by the fact that so many different pictures did get votes. Congratulations to all and of course especially to the winner ...

Just seen on the BBC website that JTWood's Short Eared Owl has been chosen for the "In Pictures: Beautiful Birds" presentation (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8487031.stm). Superb! Very many congratulations and absolutely deserved :t:
