Home made cage feeder

To prevent the Magpies and Jackdaws getting all the Mealworms and fat balls, especially during the nesting period, I decided that I needed a cage to keep the bigger birds off some of the food. Having looked at the commercial ones that you can buy in the shops, I felt that something a bit bigger would be of more use, so I made my own. The wire mesh is 50mm diameter and I had hoped that
this would keep the Squirrels out as well, but no such luck, at least one can get through the holes and much to my surprise so can the blackbirds. It's already proved very popular with the Robins and most of the Tits. For some reason though the Great Tits seem to be reluctant to use it.

Squirrels can be such a nuisance. Your cage feeder looks good.

At the moment it only seems to be one Squirrel, but we have had 4 or 5 in the past. As you say they can be a real pest.
