John's Mammals 2018 (1 Viewer)

Last couple of nights Big Whitey has been taking the evening chicken (sounds like it ought to be a euphemism ;)) and he's definitely more accustomed to our faces on the street where we live than he was. Due to the bad weather I haven't kept him hanging about for photos but I will soon.

Some of the herd of Sika Deer taken in Dorset on Thursday. Sorry for the junk photo but the light was fading fast.

I was sat in a hide last week when to my surprise a Pygmy Shrew wandered along the outside window sill (the window was closed at the time) without paying any attention to my presence, before disappearing into bramble growing around the window frame. Another reason why I rarely, if ever open glass windows in hides. A stunning beast in the early morning sunlight.

Fantastic sighting! I struggle with shrews these days, don't seem able to hear them any more. Scuffling in leaves I can hear but if they are on bare ground, no hope. Lucky you!

Just remembered that last Thursday while looking for Adders (didn't find one till Friday, don't worry, I did stop in between) I had a Bank Vole cutting green bramble leaves for a year tick. It was within a couple of yards of a regular Adder basking spot so I hope it's feeling lucky.

Last night I got a couple of indifferent shots of White Tip and reviewing them after a conversation with Clare on the same subject in relation to her foxes this morning, it strikes me that she looks enlarged about the midsection: so I reckon she must be a fair way on in her pregnancy.

John

Pictures of White Tip this evening. Not as svelte as she was a month or two ago!

She chose to eat with us tonight, perhaps feeling safer from Big Whitey who is a shocking robber, or perhaps just making the point to us in her own way that she definitely wanted a second chicken leg (which she got).

Dropped into Arne late yesterday afternoon and eventually had a bachelor herd of Sikas in the paddock before the woodland leading to the saltmarsh. The white stag was with them. Lovely late afternoon sunshine to watch them in - fantastic, even if they are introduced.

Not done much birding (or thus incidental mammaling the past few weeks), but tree planting last week encountered plenty of healthy Field Voles and a Common Shrew which thought it would be fun to climb into the bin I was carting around with me with trees in when I wasn't looking. Also a Pygmy Shrew in the bedroom was nice!!

Some photos from the last visit to Arne: Sikas including the white stag.

And some recent visits from White Tip and Big Whitey. I've been feeding foxes for several years now and this is the first chance I've had to photograph them in snow!

An afternoon that got forgotten because I have been doing little except cough seemingly for ever. A few local mammals on a rare sunny day.

A couple of shots of White Tip from the weekend. She's given birth, got her figure back in short order and resumed visiting for chicken. The middle shot isn't very good but does show at least one teat. Outside the breeding season you can't see them in the fur.
