Another one of my hobbies is shortwave radio monitoring and anything boats planes that uses a radio to communicate with land.
Here is a site that allows you to see ship movements live http://www.aisliverpool.co.uk/currentmap.php each specific area can be then zoomed in on. The data can be exported to Google Earth via an inexpensive program called Shipplotter.

Hope somebody finds it interesting.
Here is another link if you want to add to coverage in your area or find out more

Excellent resource - I've been relying on port reports - Ta.

Do you also have a shortwave receiver and antenna etc or do you do all your monitoring online? I used to be a radio amateur and transmit on shortwave. Nowadays I just occasionally listen in on an old receiver that's a bit ill but it's better than nothing.

What a superb site.
I spend an awful lot of time doing research work throughout the Orkney Isles, and seawatching off Sth Ronaldsay and have often wondered about the ships destinations etc - now I will know!!
Is their a similar site for commercial airline traffic?

Cheers,

Paul

You need a cheap modified scanner or a dedicated AIS receiver plug it into your PC and run some software and hey presto it will decode all your local shipping traffic and plot it online for you.
I have a few rigs that cover HF/VHF/UHF etc i'm only gettin back into it now after takin a break from it for a while
Here is a link as to what you need http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/what.php

Incredible contrast with the mystery and uncertainty of sea transport of the not so distant past.

Could proove to be useful resorce for our vagrant seeking members. ;)

Thanks Gareth, are you aware of any similar coverage for other areas?
